Derby gaol (jail) museum

Until I seen it on meetup I'd never been aware there even was a prison museum in Derby. It was a small poorly signposted place on a side street. I met the group and we went in, because of the group size we got a guided tour. It was a very interesting hour, we heard many stories about the prisoners, the public executions and seen the graffiti on the doors.

Castle Donington & The Airport Trail

June 25, 2024

I was amazed this walk was even happening, first I'd been on the pub crawl yesterday but woke up feeling ok. Then the heatwave reduced the 30 walkers by the hour to 8 by the time I arrived at the start. To be honest it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. We headed north then along a footpath due east, before joining the back of the airport trail. The airport was one side and soulless warehouses on the other. The rest point was Greggs in the terminal before the most interesting part of the walk. It was surprisingly scenic for saying we were so close to the airport with ponds and shaded woodland. There was about a mile of road before the aeropark where loads of people were plane spotting. Then a short walk through the estates back to the start point.

Nottingham Pub Crawl

A day out in Nottingham with the Leicester group looked good on paper. I was feeling a lot better and was ready for it. Met them an hour after the start, once I know a group for drinking events I don't become the first to arrive unless due to public transport. The canal house was very busy for the time of day with security already on the door. Moved on to Ye olde trip to Jerusalem which was a change from the usual. I'm a fan of going to old historic places especially on daytime sessions. We moved on to other pubs including the Magic garden, nice place to sit on a summer afternoon but the price of drinks were 20-30% higher than the other pubs. We then headed to the familiar Pitcher and piano, by this point it was gone 18:00 and the group was starting to go downhill. Had one more beer across the road then called it a day.

Market Harborough Pub Crawl (Joint meetup with Market Harborough Social group)

This was one meetup I was looking forward to, a day out in a completely new town. No accommodation thanks to a wedding so it was going to have to be a late bus/train home. The only quiet pub in town was the Admiral Nelson slightly out of the centre, where we started before heading into town. While the Mercado lounge was not really a pub we did come across some nice places. The town had an upmarket feel to it, by Fernie hall some of the group started getting loud and annoying the bar staff. I finished off at the Freemasons arms after an impressive day where most of the venues were busy.

OAKHAM PUB CRAWL

March 30, 2025

Oakham falls firmly into the category of towns that made me think “why have I never been here before”. We started off near the train station at the grainstore pub that sells craft beers and went from there. Heading around town we visited 7 venues from traditional pubs to sports bars and more upmarket venues finishing around 7PM.

Strelley Village/Kimberley/Oldmoor Woods - 6 mile circular

I had a choice of Strelley on Saturday or Beeston canal on Sunday. Having done Beeston only a few months earlier I opted for the Saturday walk. We met at Strelley hall and headed west crossing the M1. It was a warm sunny day and a flattish, easy enough walk. We headed south then back to the road near where we started. Had an hour of coffee and cake at Strelley hall then headed home.

DRINKS AT 45 WEST

After 2 months I finally bit the bullet and attended my first ever meetup. Headed into Leicester to a upmarket looking bar called 45 west . Within 10 minutes of arriving I was recognized by the organizer Ben and was soon joined by everyone else. It was his first meetup with the group he has just created so most of the dozen people were complete strangers. We all seemed to get on well as it was as good a start as I could have hoped for. After a couple of hours we moved onto the next pub Brewdog which I had been in once before. By this point drinks and conversation were flowing well and I had this "why didn't I do this years ago feeling". Finally we headed to Firebug , a bit more of a rough and ready type pub so we did a fairly good variety in just a few hours. By this point time was ticking down and some were calling it a night so I got the last bus and headed home.

Hockley Hustle

I was originally meant to be going walking but the event got cancelled a couple of days before. Hockley Hustle was a massive event advertising 400 acts over 40 venues. Far too big to be researching on YouTube, the little research I did do I forgot to transfer to phone and turned up clueless anyway. We met for breakfast in Weatherspoon's before being taken on a walking tour of the venues. This was interesting as I seen many streets and pubs I'd never seen before. Starting off in rough trade we seen the first 2 acts, Jonny Olley then Kelsey and the Embers. Both were entertaining and it was a good start to the day. Everyone wanted a change of scenery so next stop was Billy Bootleggers, nice venue but too quiet for my taste. Then it was onto the very modern looking metronome to see Sancho panza which I liked. The others went to back to rough trade but I stayed to watch these a bit longer. But the time I arrived it was getting crowded and there was no chance of gettin...

REMOVED FROM MEETUP GROUP

Had an unexpected e-mail 3 weeks after my last meetup. YOU HAVE BEEN REMOVED FROM THE GROUP LEICESTER 20s & 30s SOCIAL I tried to contact the group organizer Ben only to discover that he had blocked my messages. I did however spot a clue, the group had been renamed Leicester 20 to 32 social. I also noticed that a couple of peoples profiles who attended the 2 previous meets had been replaced with the words "former member". I thought it was pathetic to change the age range of the group especially after doing 2 great nights out. If everyone had been in the 18 - 25 age range and I felt out of place I wouldn't have come back the second time. But that wasn't the case. I will reach a point one day when clubs and loud bars won't be my thing but I can decide that for myself. I did message a couple of people to find out what was going on but the bottom line was it's Bens group, he paid to host it and there's nothing I could do. I immediately joined sever...

Beat The Streets 2024 - 5 Venues, 50+ Artists, all for Notts' Framework Charity

I'd done beat the streets a couple of years earlier. We met in the Horn in hand for breakfast before heading to the venues. First stop was whiskey stain at the red room which I didn't plan to watch but were ok. I then made a dash to Rough trade to see Grain who to be honest weren't great but that was the only time I went that venue. Cam mannix who I'd seen before at splendour put on a good show at rock city. From that point on all the bands I wanted to see were at rescue rooms. Bloodworm were ok, but lacey were far too heavy for my taste so I went back to the horn in hand for a diet coke and a rest. Others from the group were also taking a bit of time out. By the time we went back the cost of living were on at 19:00 and the crowd were getting louder. Unlike last time I didn't spend long alone due to losing people. LEICESTER TOWN DRINKS

It was a choice between Nottingham and Leicester so I picked Leicester due to the smaller group size. It was the same starting place as 2 weeks ago, the Queen of Bradgate pub. A couple of faces I knew made for an ok start to the evening. It wasn't as busy as 2 weeks before which was probably a good thing as it was packed. Second stop was the Gadabout , nice place but had the atmosphere of a restaurant. In fact some of us thought it was a restaurant but we didn't see any food being eaten. Revolution was the second place of the evening that I'd never set foot in before. We walked straight into a fight that was kicking off in a corner. Strangely only one bouncer came to intervene but it was over in 10 minutes. Despite that I liked the place and would have been happy to stay there the rest of the night.
